Wedgefield Community Park

As the first recipient of SCAL’s Accessibility and Outreach Committee's community mini-grant, the Wedgefield Community Coalition in rural western Sumter County completed construction of a community park in August 2006. The park has a play area for children, walking track and picnic area. A portion of the park is pictured below. This first-ever community park in Wedgefield has increased the physical activity of residents and their civic and community pride. The SCAL mini-grant, additional funds from participating churches and in-kind support from local businesses has made this park project possible and is an excellent example of how diverse groups within a local community came together for mutual benefit.


Award
Congratulations to SCAL! In September 2006, we were recognized by the South Carolina Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness with an award for our valuable efforts in promoting physical activity for the citizens of South Carolina. This is the second award SCAL has won from the Governor’s Council.

USC Sumter Walking Trail

Another public walking trail is open in Sumter County! On March 7, 2007, USC Sumter opened its marked one-mile sidewalk trail with an official ribbon cutting ceremony attended by the mayor of Sumter; representatives of the City of Sumter, USC Sumter, Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce; SC Department of Health and Environmental Control; local businesses and Sumter County Active Lifestyles. The trail begins and ends in the Founders Grove area of the USC Sumter campus and can be accessed on Theatre Drive anytime during normal campus hours (8 a.m. to 10 p.m.). There is the potential for increasing the length of the trail, up to a three-mile route, in the future.
