Community Advocacy and Leadership Program (CALP) Round 1 CALP graduates from the Rembert Area Community Coalition (RACC) and Salterstown Community Center (SCC) each completed park improvement projects with a $5,000 CALP mini-grant. RACC added playground equipment on the RACC Community Center property. (A basketball court will be installed soon.) SCC installed playground equipment at Salterstown Park.
Round 2 CALP participants have completed six workshops so far. They have learned about leadership, team building, effective communication, conflict resolution, chairing a meeting, cultural sensitivity/inclusion, community health development, political advocacy, media advocacy and strategic planning. With workshops on grant writing and community resources and technology left to complete, CALP participants are looking forward to graduation in November.
In the months since the Sumter County On The Move! park celebration events in SCAL’s partner communities last April and May, USC PRC and SCAL have been planning the walking intervention, which will kick off in late 2011/early 2012. After months of information gathering, data analysis, message development and materials production, four churches in Rembert and Wedgefield have received our Diabetes is NO Sweet Thing! educational materials. These eye-catching publications are delivering information about diabetes to members of Orangehill A.M.E. Church, St. Michael A.M.E. Church, Tiverton Missionary Baptist Church and Union Baptist Church of Rembert.
