Welcome to Step Up. Step Out!

You're moving in the right direction to improve your health! People of all ages can improve their quality of life through a lifelong practice of moderate physical activity. To improve your health, you need to be exercising regularly--at least 30 minutes at a moderate intensity level, 5 days each week. UPDATE: These physical activity guidelines have recently been updated. Visit for more information.

Studies show that a regular routine of at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise 5 days a week can help in the prevention of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer in people of all ages.

Step Up. Step Out! began as a research study conducted by the University of South Carolina's Prevention Research Center in partnership with Sumter County Active Lifestyles and the Sumter County Recreation and Parks Department. As a result of the program, the participants who stayed in the program for 24 weeks increased their level of moderate or vigorous intensity physical activity by 40 minutes a day.

Now, Step Up. Step Out! is available to everyone!
